About carbon capture

Carbon capture is the process of capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from power plants and other industrial facilities before it is released into the atmosphere. The CO2 can then be stored underground or used in other industrial processes. Carbon capture is sometimes referred to as "negative emissions technology" because it can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and other industrial sources.

How Does Carbon Capture Work?

There are a few different ways to capture CO2. One common method is called post-combustion capture. In this process, CO2 is separated from other gases after combustion has occurred.

Once the CO2 has been captured, it can be stored underground in deep geological formations, such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs or saline aquifers.

Pre-combustion capture is another type of carbon capture. In pre-combustion capture, fossil fuels are reacted with oxygen to produce CO2 and hydrogen. The CO2 is then separated from the hydrogen gas and can be transported and stored.

Oxygen combustion is a third type of carbon capture. In this process, fossil fuels are burned in an oxygen-rich environment. This creates a very hot flame that produces little CO2. The CO2 that is produced is then captured before it has a chance to enter the atmosphere.

Carbon capture offers a number of potential benefits, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing air pollution, and creating new economic opportunities in the CCS industry. CCS can also help extend the life of fossil fuel resources by allowing power plants to continue operating while reducing their emissions.
